Hello everyone,

As everyone might guess, the temperature got pretty warm today. My Garmin registered 107 degrees but what the heck it is a dry heat. It was quite a bit cooler for most of the day and the Garmin probably registered the heat off the pavement but I guess that is where I was.

Today’s route took us almost 100 miles from Indio CA to Blythe CA. Kudos to Tracy and the CrossRoads staff for their attention to us and vigilance in watching over our group. I think that at east 2 folks had to leave the course due to heat. At the rest stops, they took our Camelbacks and water bottles and filled the for us as we used the facilities or got something to eat. You have to consume calories almost all day long. Salt, sweets, gels , gatorade, fig newtons, energy bars, bananas, apple sauce and pickles. Pickles are great to replenish electrolytes.

The night before the ride, we had quite a bit of information on the dangers of the desert and what to look out for. Wes started the day with a 12 mile climb but it was highway grade. A lot of our miles were actually on I-10 as there are no access roads. There was a 10 mile or so stretch whose pavement was so warped and cracked that we’d have been better off with mountain bikes. Most of the rest of the raids were not too bad.

I rode most of the day with Howard from Great Britain. He is a very strong cyclist and is full of entertaining tales. It made the miles in the heat go very quickly. Early on, we rode with several others riders but we stretched out over time. We got to the hotel around 3:00 pm – very thankful for a safe journey. A couple of the riders were hurting pretty badly and some are nursing injuries. It is a really good group of strong cyclists.

Tomorrow is the longest day of the cross country ride and we expect a very hot day over 116 miles. The following day, we hit the mountains as we travel to Prescott.

Hopefully this link to my Garmin ride works:

Many thanks for reading and any support for the Wounded Warrior Project is appreciated.

  1. Great ride Chuck. Despite the high temp, I suspect you had either little wind or you are trying to beat the bus this year.
If the latter, remember this: “Nobody beats the bus. Not even the bus beats the bus!”

  2. You are always an amazing writer. You are obviously much stronger than me with your speeds. Keep it up and you will blow across America no problem.
