In 2010, Larry Emigh dedicated himself to a fundraising effort that few would even think about attempting. Starting on May 13, 2012, as a fundraiser for the Children’s Dyslexia Center in State College, PA, Larry will ride his bicycle across the United States, from the West Coast to the East Coast.
While completing the ride is goal enough, Larry’s real goal for this bike trip is to raise awareness that children with dyslexia desperately need help, specifically the children that need support at the Children’s Dyslexia Center in State College, PA. Raising funds to support the Center is important because it provides free tutoring to dyslexic children between 6 and 18 years of age.
A resident in the State College, PA area for over 40 years, Larry is a graduate of Penn State University and he and his wife have been owners of Growing Tree Toys, a children’s toy store, since 1982. He has been donating his time and efforts to charitable organizations in the community for many years, but the Children’s Dyslexia Center has been his primary charity since its opening in 2007. The “Tour for Dyslexia” is his latest fundraising initiative for this worthwhile cause.
The Tour for Dyslexia website is your connection for any information on this challenging fundraiser, providing all of the latest information on Larry’s training, his fundraising efforts, and updates from the “open road.” His journey on the open road begins when he dips the rear wheel of his Cannondale bicycle in the Pacific Ocean at Manhattan Beach in Los Angeles, CA. From there, he will embark on a 50-day bike trip to his final destination of Revere Beach in Boston, MA. And you can follow him along the way, whether it is the 101 mile ride across the Mojave Desert or the 7,023 feet climb to Jerome, AZ. His blog will take you the whole way, each of the 3,415 miles – and all the training and fundraising that takes place before the trek.
And while Larry may enjoy the miles and the sights along his cross-country ride, he is really doing it so the children with dyslexia in and near State College can take advantage of the wonderful programs and staff of the Children’s Dyslexia Center. Every mile he travels, he is one step closer to reaching his goal, and helping these hard-working children reach their goals too!
Larry has dedicated two years of his life to training for this seven week ride across the United States. And whether or not you want to donate to the cause, we hope you will choose to ride along in his journey – the early mornings, the training rides, the fundraising – all the way to the end with his front wheel dip into the Atlantic Ocean.
