Two Wheels, a Tent and Half a Brain – post #2 Riding for The Backstoppers

I have a lot to be thankful for. The ability to be able to do a ride like this takes some degree of financial success and good health. When I was a child, I suffered from chronic asthma and I certainly didn’t have the financial resources. As time went by, I bested the asthma and was able to compete in athletic events that I would never have dreamed possible. So I have learned to be extremely grateful for that which I now have. I also lie to try to give back especially to those have given so much in service to us.

This year, I decided to ride for The Backstoppers, a local organization who in their own  words: “Started in 1959, The BackStoppers provides needed financial assistance and support to the spouses and dependent children of all police officers, firefighters and volunteer firefighters, and publicly-funded paramedics and EMTs in our coverage area who have lost their lives or suffered a catastrophic injury performing their duty.”

I view these first responders as fulfilling the primary role of government which is the safety and protection of its citizens on a local front.  These folks labor under extremely hazardous conditions and typically don’t make a lot of money for their efforts.

I provided links on my blogs to their donation page and also considerable information about what they do as an organization and whom they have helped. Unlike my past rides, I couldn’t set up a donation link so I or no one else will publicly who donated what. However, it would be fantastic if The Backstoppers sees a surge in donations due to my ride. Small amounts matter!

If you enjoy reading about my ride or the photos that I will post, please consider making a donation that will help the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Many Thanks

Chuck Hardesty
