Day 7 Indianapolis IN – Richmond IN 83 miles (week 5)

Hello everyone,
I am having a very hard time getting an internet connection. I may post tomorrow (ifI can). Sorry – we have 3 tough days that approach 300 miles and the internet is acting as if it cycled the entire distance.

Internet headwinds

Okay – I have gone to the Lobby and seem to have a decent connection. I have some good pictures too but will post them tomorrow .

I would call this a deceptively tough day of 83 miles. It was warm and humid as we left Indianapolis and we hit quite a few stoplights along the way. We had some cross and headwinds most of the morning but I didn’t realize that we climbed a good portion of the day. It looked flat but the Garmin doesn’t lie. The only SAG was at mile 38 and by then we were in the country. Most of the ring today was on back roads and we had about 5 miles of chip and seal with a lot of gravel. Seems like a lot of potholes and highway cracks. A couple of riders lost water bottles when they hit a rough patch.

We are in Amish country and although I didn’t see any buggies, some of the other riders did. Lots of farm smells, corn fields and animals along the route today. The second half of the day got really hot and humid as we rode through centerville on our way to Richmond. Richmond is a large town and we hit a lot of stoplights in town.

Throughout the day, I rode with different sets of riders and rode into town with Ron one of the new riders from San Antonio, Texas. Ron told us an interesting tale about what happened to him last fall. He ws constructing a deer stand about 14 feet up and fell out of the tree. I forget all that he broke but he ws unconscious for part of the time and was in the Kentucky woods alone and cols at night. They searched for him and found him on a second pass and he had to be airlifted out. Doctors thought he might not walk and here he is riding the last 1200 miles of our tour. he said that he aimed to prove the doctors wrong.

At route rap, we all (not me – since I have one) put on fake mustaches when Tracey had her back turned. Someone asked her “I must ashe” you a question? She was surprised and thrilled and I have a few group and individual photos to post. I think we are getting slap happy. The next two days will be in excess of 200 miles with 8000 feet of climbing. I can’t say we are looking forward to it and have our survival hats on…
