Greetings all,
Apologies for this being a day late. but today is a “rest” day and I was really fatigued yesterday after the ride / weather / celebration!
We are really getting into the Midwest summer weather – humid and hot – although yesterday was not too bad. I started out with the last group to leave and Mike F kept getting faster and faster. The early morning coolness slowly evaporated into more muggy weather. Now – 60 miles is an easy day, but many felt is was fairly tough. The first 20 miles went by fast but then we turned onto a chip “n seal road and the road conditions combined with the headwinds and heat slowed us quite a bit. The SAG was at mile 30 or so and we lingered until we were the last riders.
One of the things about rods is that the conditions often change dramatically when you cross into a new county. The road conditions improved quite a bit after mile 40 but we still had the headwind and heat / humidity. Everyone was dragging a bit from 8 consecutive days of riding. Mike and I caught all the riders except Julie who was on fire that day. Most of us went to DQ before checking into the hotel. The hotel was on the other side of Abilene and we got to see a lot of the town in passing. For such a small town there is a lot to see including museums, large mansions, President Eisenhower’s boyhood home etc. WE did visit some on the rest day and I will write a bit about that in my next installation.
I did go out and but a couple of six packs and shared them with a few other riders. Most of us went to a Mexican restaurant for dinner and I also had a large margaritta (there were 2 or 3 larger sizes). That is the main reason, I didn’t complete the blog after dinner. I think I went to bed early…
Rest day coming up….
Tailwinds
Chuck
